5 things owners of picky dogs have tried before giving up on supplements
...and the one most people haven’t tried yet.
If you’ve bought a supplement that’s been sitting in your cupboard for months because your dog won’t take it, this is for you. We’ve been through every one of these ourselves. Here’s the list, in the order most people try them.
1Peanut butter
The classic. Works for about four days before most dogs catch on. The reason: dogs smell pills through peanut butter the way you’d smell garlic through a sandwich. The first three times are a bonding moment. The fifth time your dog takes the peanut butter off the spoon and leaves the pill on the floor like a tip.
2Pill pockets
The $8 bag of chewy treats designed for exactly this. In the emails we read, roughly 40% of owners report the same thing: the dog bites the outside off, spits the pill out, and swallows the empty shell. The pocket is doing exactly what it’s designed to do. The dog is just smarter than the design.
3Cheese or deli meat
Lasts a little longer because the fat masks the scent better. Then your dog associates “piece of cheese handed to me outside of mealtime” with “something inside the cheese,” and that’s the end of cheese. You’ve now also lost cheese as a training treat, which stings.
4Crushing it into wet food
Works maybe one in five times. The powder sits on top of the food in a visible dusting; the dog eats around it. If your dog eats kibble, this is worse — the crumbs sink to the bottom of the bowl and sit there untouched after the kibble is gone. You end up throwing out eighty cents of supplement every day.
5The nuclear option — holding their snout shut
It works. It also quietly damages the thing you actually need: your dog’s trust that mealtime is safe. The owners we hear from who did this long-term report their dog starts avoiding the kitchen when they hear the pill bottle rattle. If that’s where you are, it’s a sign to switch methods, not keep forcing it.
What a lot of owners switched to instead
Liquid drops that go directly into the food, not a disguise around a pill. Three things change when you make the switch:
- There’s no pill shape to find or spit out.
- Liquid soaks into kibble and mixes into the moisture of wet food — no visible powder on top.
- Dose is by your dog’s weight, not “4–6 drops as needed.”
This is why we built Purely Dog Liquid Collagen as drops instead of a pill or a powder. It mixes into whatever your dog is already eating. No new routine, no new fight.
